The student can transform bacterial cells by the uptake of a plasmid from the medium and identify the transformed cells by growing the E. coli on antibiotic-containing agar plates. Once inside the bacterium, the plasmid DNA replicates and expresses the drug resistance markers that allow the transformed cells to grow in the presence of selected antibiotics.
