Gain firsthand insight into the critical process of mitosis, the reproduction of plant and animal cells. Your students use the "squash" method to prepare their own microscope slides from onion root cells that they grow themselves. They then use a microscope to observe the chromosomes found in the tips of these cells, identify the various stages of mitosis and calculate the percentage of cells in each stage. Using the included reference slide of an early whitefish embryo and onion root tip with the accompanying illustrations of the mitotic process, the class also identifies the fascinating similarities and differences between mitosis in plant and animal cells. Class size - 40 students. Your students will: Perform staining and mounting of onion root tip cells for microscopic examination Observe chromosomes in a rapidly dividing plant tissue - onion root tips Identify the phases of mitosis in plant and animal cells Compare and contrast the process of mitosis between plant and animal cells
