Item: W-PUB 7010
220 pages. VanDeGraaff & Crawley. This full-color atlas is intended to act as a supplement to introductory microbiology laboratory manuals. It is not designed to replace them, nor is it intended to replace actual performance of the techniques. Rather, the photographs are supplied to help with the interpretation of results. The second edition continues to include the successful features of the first with superior-quality, full-color photographs, informative color diagrams, and textual information that is easy to read and understand. New photographs have been added, and other photographs have been replaced with better ones. The Atlas is divided into thirteen sections, each devoted to a particular component of a typical introductory microbiology course. Topics within the first ten sections typically include: Purpose: describes why the procedure is done, Medical Applications: describes the specific medical application or procedure that is appropriate, Principle probes some aspect of bacterial physiology, morphology, or biochemistry, the theory behind the procedure, and helpful hints to avoid common pitfalls. In the second edition, many new differential tests have been added to Section 5; the former section, Host Defenses, Immunology and Serology, has been split into two sections: Host Defenses(8) and Molecular Biology Techniques, Immunology, and Serology(9); there is new section on Bacterial Pathogens(11); and viruses(10), Fungi(11), and Parasitic protozoans and Helminthes(13) are all individual sections with expanded coverage. The ninth section is devoted to a survey of viruses, protozoans, and fungi that might be seen or discussed in an introductory microbiology class. Medical comments are also included where relevant. Several appendices are included, providing detail on glycolysis, Krebs Cycle, and fermentation. A list of selected references is also provided for students who wish to expand on the information provided in the Atlas.
