Study of the Structure and Function of Mitochondria Kit
Item: W-LAB 62
A complete plant cell lab. Normal methods of preparing mitochondria tend to destroy them. Using live celery (available at your local market) and this kit, the study of mitochondria is vividly brought to your students. This kit has a special stain that acts as a hydrogen acceptor. Students can readily observe mitochondria oxidize food, mainly by the removal of hydrogen on slides they prepare, as the stain gradually loses color. Following directions on individualized worksheets, students observe mitochondria microscopically, both as cytoplasmic particles and as centers of enzyme activity, the energy producers in cells. Live (very fresh) celery is necessary (not provided) for this lab activity as well as microscopes. Kit contains enough material for 30 students to perform the activity individually. Contents: 3 drop controlled bottles Sucrose solution 3 drop controlled bottles Janus green B stain 3 drop controlled bottles sodium bisulfate solution 30 microscope slides 30 cover slips 30 single-edged razor blades 1 package absorbent paper 1 package plastic toothpicks 30 Student Worksheets and Guides 1 Instruction Manual with MSDS
