Molecular Model of DNA and Its Replication Kit

This kit is an activity for every class that studies DNA. Students build their own model, twist it and see what a double helix looks like. Using simple and exclusively LAB-AIDS components, students easily build an eight rung ladder segment of the DNA molecule based on the model proposed by Watson and Crick in 1953. The components are made of color-coded plastic and are easily assembled and disassembled. This model is flexible and is twisted to form the double helix-structure. Twelve helix models consisting of 4 cytosine, 4 thymine, 4 adenine, 4-guanine nitrogen bases, 16 phosphate groups and 16 deoxyribose sugar groups are built with each kit. The double nitrogen pyrimidine bases (cytosine and thymine) are constructed proportionately larger in diameter than the single nitrogen purine bases (adenine and guanine) and they are linked by a unique hydrogen bond. The deoxyribose sugar is pentagon shaped which represents its actual molecular structure. The helix model can be unzipped permitting the students to replicate their DNA segment. The 12 model segments built with the kit can be attached to each other to make a giant helix DNA model that can also be coiled and will be more than nine (9) feet long. All components are reusable in this kit. Kit contains enough material for 12 lab groups of 2 students each.
