Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) has become an important analytical technique since methods were devised to insure the uniform application of absorbents on glass or plastic sheets. This method is more efficient than paper chromatography. Using the precoated plastic chromatographic sheets and the concentrated solutions supplied in this kit, the most vivid demonstration of chromatography is assured. Students can accomplish a dramatic TLC demonstration in a single classroom period without the difficulty of preparing slurries and plating glass strips. Each student can run two chromatograms, one using concentrated chlorophyll pigment, the other using concentrated carotenoid pigment. These pigments have been extracted by a method yielding extremely dark pigments showing excellent separation bands of the Carotenoids, Xanthophylls, Phaeophytins and Chlorophylls. This extract retains its color and stability indefinitely. Full TLC background information and instructions included.
