Students will have the opportunity to observe the major components of plant and animal cells using simple staining procedures. Student activities include observation of the following cell components: nucleus, nucleolus, membrane organelles. Other activities include the staining of the mitochondria, chloroplasts, storage inclusions, starch granules, and cell walls. The function of the cell membrane is demonstrated, and both plant and animal cells are compared. Living cells are observed showing cytoplasmic streaming and chemical activity. The relationship between structure and function of the cellular and subcellular level is discussed. You need to provide microscopes and fresh cells such as potato, celery, or Elodea.
